The Sixteenth Question: Daddy Lessons
Reflecting on the things we learn from our father figures
It’s Father’s Day here in the US, a day filled with love and complication. Whether we have a relationship with our biological father or not, there is certainly someone in your life who filled that role: an uncle, a grandfather, a teacher, a neighbor, a brother, a coach…a mother, a sister…someone. This week, I want to reflect on what they instilled in us.
What’s a lesson you learned from your father figure?
How do you live out this lesson in your life today?
What does this lesson mean to you?
How was this lesson taught to you?
Have you shared this lesson/value with others?
How might your life be different if you had never learned this from him? Do you think you would have eventually had this passed to you by some other means?
Our Community Speaks
As always, but especially this week, I’d love to hear from you all about the lessons you learned or values you were instilled with. Feel free to just in the comments below with them, or drop me an email or a DM. Hopefully we can create a nice round-up of these on Friday, or at some point in the future.
Something for the Week
Mari Andrew writes a fantastic Substack, Out of the Blue. I think it’s worth taking the time to read her piece from this week, “It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense.” She addresses something that I think is a common thought trap for creators: that (and I’m paraphrasing here) sometimes we write something and feel like it doesn’t make sense except to ourselves, and we’re not sure if people will understand what we’re saying.
The trap of worrying about others interpretations and expectations.
Mari’s piece is short and hearing her perspective is incredibly useful for any creator, whether you run a TikTok for 2MM fans or just write for yourself in your journal everyday. Read the whole thing here, but this excerpt is a personal favorite:
A wonderful man standing nearby said, “I just realized something about all my favorite writers. I couldn’t tell you what they write about. I just like them. I like getting their specific perspective. The subject they write about almost doesn’t matter. It’s not why I read them.”
Happy Sunday folks, and see you Friday!
